Teardrop earrings (New Zealand pounamu)

These earrings were carved using New Zealand pounamu.

Roimata, the teardrop, is important in Maori design. The first designs are said to come from the tears shed during the separation of Ranginui (Sky father) and Papatuanuku (Earthmother). The modern-day meaning for the wearer has transformed to mean healing and growth after difficult challenges. 

These earrings are on sterling silver backings.
